Error description

  • An AIX or VIOS update to AIX 6.1 TL08 or 7.1 TL02 - based
versions overrides custom DS8k hdisk attributes. Custom
values like reserve_policy & algorithm set to no_reserve
    &
round_robin for example are reverted back to the default
    values single_path & fail_over for a new DS8k ODM
uniquetype 'PCM/friend/aixmpiods8k'. The same is true for
any/all other customized disk attributes - not just the
    examples
provided here. ALL existing/configured DS8K disks will
revert back to default disk attributes upon upgrade of
    AIX or VIOS.

This does not apply to SDDPCM configurations. It affects
    only
    DS8k configurations with 'PCM/friend/fcpother' uniquetype
and some custom DS8k hdisk attributes.

This applies only to DS8K. No other storage type is
impacted. It applies only to DISK attributes - not to
    customized adapter attributes.

Local fix

  • Prior to the AIX or VIOS upgrade, save the lsattr -El
    output
of all DS8K disks with customized disk attributes. (NOTE:
a snap saved off prior to the upgrade will contain that
    information.)

After the upgrade, manually change the attributes back to
    the desired custom settings.

Problem summary

  • When updating to AIX 6.1 TL 8 or 7.1 TL 2, DS8K disks managed
by AIX PCM will migrate from "disk/fcp/mpioosdisk" ODM
unique type to "disk/fcp/aixmpiods8k" uniquetype. In the
process of the ODM uniquetype migration existing customized
DS8K disk instances may have their customized attributes
(CuAt's) deleted resulting in the disk attributes reverting
to the default settings. "disk/fcp/mpioosdisk" and
"disk/fcp/aixmpiods8k" have similar default attribute values.
Worst case this could result in the reserve_policy reverting
back to "single_path" after an update. If a disk is accessed
after the update in a clustered, shared environment after the
update and the reserve_policy has reverted, then it can
result in other hosts encountering reservation conflicts
when accessing the shared disk. This issue does not affect
    DS8K disks managed by SDDPCM.

Problem conclusion

  • Preserve customized attribute values for DS8K disks when
migrating ODM uniquetype from "disk/fcp/mpioosdisk" to
"disk/fcp/aixmpiods8k" due to an AIX update.
