IV19990: TAR HANDLING OF SELECT GNU FEATURES APPLIES TO AIX 6100-08

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• The existing tar command on AIX has some size limits that
  restricts filename limits to 100 characters and UID,GID limits
  to o77777777. This line item is to extend these limits to:
  1) Accept large UID/GID values. We will allow up to UINT_MAX
     (0xFFFFFFFF).
  2) Remove limit on filename length. Any length is accepted
    (limited by the filesystem being backed-up from or restored-
     to, not limited by tar itself).
  

Local fix

Problem summary

• The existing tar command on AIX has some size limits that

Problem conclusion

• Code changes done to accept larger uid/ gid values.  To support
  long filenames, we have a special file on the archive which
  will hold the full name of the file and the actual file will be
  archived after this.
