IBM Spectrum Scale Software/IBM Elastic Storage Server: Release Recommendation

Abstract

IBM Spectrum Scale customers running prior versions are encouraged to upgrade to V4.2.3.14 in order to benefit from numerous quality improvement fixes included in this release. IBM Elastic Storage Server (ESS) V5.2.6 also leverages Spectrum Scale V4.2.3.14 to provide additional robustness and reliability. IBM also strongly recommends that ESS systems running prior versions be upgraded to ESS 5.2.6 or later releases.

IBM is committed to delivering continual quality improvements in our products.

Significant updates were introduced in V4.2.3.14 focusing on improving overall reliability and behavior under error conditions. The focus areas for this service release were the core file system, protocol and GPFS Native Raid (GNR) along with much better resiliency under network or storage failure events.

To experience the benefits of the increased testing and numerous improvements in this release,  IBM strongly recommends that any Spectrum Scale systems running prior versions be upgraded to the V4.2.3.14 or subsequent service levels at their earliest opportunity. After upgrading, customers are also strongly encouraged to issue the following command, to ensure that all fixes contained in the 4.2.3.14 code level are made active:
    mmchfs <device> -V full   (Refer to the following technote:  https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ibm10719585 for more details.)
Customers with workloads containing large numbers of file or directory creates to a shared directory from multiple nodes should move to 4.2.3.14 (from any previous 4.1, 4.2.0 or 4.2.1 code levels) to ensure no degradation of performance on those I/O patterns.

IBM Elastic Storage Server (ESS) V5.2.6 also leverages Spectrum Scale V4.2.3.14 to provide additional robustness and reliability. IBM also strongly recommends that ESS systems running prior versions be upgraded to ESS 5.2.6 or later releases.
