"User XYZ is already logged in to this database. Do you want to start a new session for this user?" message launching Controller (10.4.0 onwards)

Troubleshooting

Problem

User launches the main Controller client (ccr.exe). User logs on with their username/password. A message appears.

Symptom

image-20190108124226-1
User ADM is already logged in to this database. Do you want to start a new session for this user?
WARNING: Starting a new session will release the previous session !

Cause

There are many known causes for a similar 'User XYZ already logged in to this database' error.
  • For more examples, see separate IBM Technote #0794293.
This Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the customer is using Controller 10.4 (or later) and the cause is that either:
  • The user already has a session of Controller running (perhaps on a different PC or server) which has their Controller username logged in
  • or the user has recently had their session of Controller crash (therefore the system thinks that the user is still logged in).
More Information:
From Controller 10.4.0 onwards, there is a new user manager system. This means that there is a new mechanism for Controller to manage/track logged on users. This new mechanism gives the ability for users to be able to end/kill their old sessions (which may be running on a different PC, or may have crashed in the background) during a fresh/new logon process.
  • This new feature is mainly designed to allow users to more quickly recover from crashed old sessions.

Environment

Controller 10.4 (or later).

Resolving The Problem

This is by design.
More Information:
If the user clicks 'Yes' then if there is an active session of Controller elsewhere (for example on a different PC) with the same user logged on, then they will see a message similar to:

The connection with the server was lost. Controller will terminate.
