How to create a 'Reset my Citrix sessions' Citrix published application, to allow end users to reset their own Controller session

How To

Summary

Customer is deploying Controller via Citrix. Occasionally (intermittently) users are suffering from errors due to unexplained crashes and/or accidental extra rogue processes (for example multiple EXCEL.EXE processes running under the same Windows user account's session).

Currently the end users are contacting the customer's I.T. department to reset their Citrix session, to solve these intermittent issues.

Customer would like an easy method where the end users themselves can reset their Citrix session (without contacting their I.T. department). Is this possible?

Objective

Customer would like to give the ability for the end users to terminate all processes running under their Windows username (on the Citrix server where they are using Controller)  completely, without the need for their I.T. department's assistance.

More Information:

There are other methods to achieve a similar objective - for example see separate IBM Technote #1978164.

  • This Technote specifically relates to the method where the end user gets a new Citrix icon 'Reset my Citrix sessions' .

Steps

Ask the I.T. department's Citrix administrator to perform the following steps:

1. Logon to the Citrix server (where the Controller application is being published) as a Windows administrator

2. Extract the attached file "TN_0717639-Reset_my_Citrix_sessions.zip"

3. Copy the extracted file "Reset_my_Citrix_sessions.bat" onto the Citrix server

- Paste it into a suitable location, for example, where the Controller client is installed

- By default this is here: C:\Program Files\IBM\IBM Cognos Controller Local Client

4. Repeat steps 1-3 for all the Citrix servers (where Controller is being published from)

5. Create a new Citrix published application (called 'Reset my Citrix Sessions') which points to the batch file

- For example, here: C:\Program Files\IBM\IBM Cognos Controller Local Client\Reset_my_Citrix_sessions.bat

6. Give/assign the Controller users permission to run that new Citrix published application

7. Ask the users to test the icon. They should see something similar to:

image-20180717165859-1

By clicking the above icon, it should kill all processes running under that user ID (for example any 'hidden' EXCEL.EXE processes) and reset the Citrix session completely.
