Licenses required by DB2 Version 9.1

Question & Answer

Question

After installation of the DB2 family of data servers, you must complete a post install step to properly register the license.

Cause

For more information about the new licensing requirements in DB2® Version 9, refer to the links under "Related information".

Diagnosis details
If you install the product from the installation image or CD without adding the db2ese_c.lic or db2ese_u.lic you'll see the following output from the command db2licm -l:

Product name: "DB2 Enterprise Server Edition"
License type: "License not registered"
Expiry date: "License not registered"
Product identifier: "db2ese"
Version information: "9.1"
Annotation: "-1;(_b)"

Note: In Version 9, you are no longer required to add the db2ese.lic license key. The db2ese.lic is handled automatically by the installer. After installation the user must install either the CPU or Authorized User Option license key.

Answer

After installation, you must register the license key for either the Authorized User Option or CPU Option. You will need either the Authorized User Option license key (db2ese_u.lic) or the CPU Option license key (db2ese_c.lic ).

In Passport Advantage, these license keys are found in the /db2/license directory on the "Activation CDs", labelled as follows:

  • IBM DB2 Enterprise Server Edition - CPU Option (db2ese_c.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Enterprise Server Edition - Authorized User Option (db2ese_u.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Workgroup Server Edition - CPU Option (db2wse_c.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Workgroup Server Edition - Authorized User Option (db2wse_u.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Express Edition - CPU Option (db2exp_c.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Express Edition - Authorized User Option (db2exp_u.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition - Activation (db2consv_ee.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Connect Application Server - Activation (db2consv_as.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for iSeries - Activation (db2consv_is.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition for zSeries - Activation (db2consv_zs.lic)
  • IBM DB2 Connect Personal Edition - Activation (db2conpe.lic)

The license keys can be registered using either the db2licm command or the License Center, using the syntax: db2licm -a <path to license key>/<license key name>.lic

An example of the db2licm -l output once db2ese_c.lic has been registered is as follows:
Product name: "DB2 Enterprise Server Edition"
License type: "CPU"
Expiry date: "Permanent"
Product identifier: "db2ese"
Version information: "9.1"
Annotation: "-3;(_c)"
Features:
