Tivoli Storage Manager server crashes when backing up to tape using Oracle StorageTek T10000B drive with Application Managed Encryption enabled

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

When backing up to tape using an Oracle StorageTek T10000B drive with firmware revision 1.45 or 1.46 and with Application Managed Encryption enabled, the Tivoli Storage Manager server might crash.

Content

The problem is triggered by an Oracle StorageTek T10000B tape drive bug in firmware revision 1.45 and 1.46. When using these firmware revisions with a drive that does not have the appropriate encryption key, the Space and Locate commands fail with the Sense Key set to Data Protect (0x07) and ASC/ASCQ set to 0x74/0x04 which indicates that cryptographic integrity validation failed. The Tivoli Storage Manager server does not properly handle this error for some operations and will crash, issuing the following message prior to the failure.

    ANR8302E I/O error on drive T10KBDRV1 (/dev/tsmscsi/mt0) with volume ISR616TS (OP=FSF, Error Number=0, CC=424, rc = 22, KEY=07, ASC=74, ASCQ=04,SENSE=F0.00.07.00.00.00.01.12.00.00.00.00.74.04.00.00.00.00.61.01.35.0D.00.00.10.02.,Description=An encryption-related error occurred). Refer to Appendix C in the 'Messages' manual for recommended action.

Environments Affected

All Tivoli Storage Manager servers using Oracle StorageTek T10000B tape drive with firmware revisions 1.45 and 1.46 and with the device class parameter DRIVEENCRYPTION set to ON.

Recommendation
    • If you are running firmware revision 1.44 or older for an Oracle StorageTek T10000B drive, do not upgrade the drive firmware until the problem is fixed by Oracle.
    • If you are running firmware revision 1.45 or 1.46 and have encountered this crash, apply the fix for APAR IC75444 as soon as possible to prevent further crashes. Contact Oracle for the firmware fix to allow the application to position to a record or locate a record without having to set the encryption key first.

Fix Availability Schedule

APAR IC75444 has been opened to address the crash problem. Currently, the APAR is projected to be fixed in levels 5.5.5.3, 5.5.6, 6.1.5, 6.2.2.3, and 6.2.3. Note that this is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
