Abstract
Configuration Information for NetApp Virtual Tape Library
Content
NetApp VTL
NetApp VTL is a disk-to-disk backup appliance that appears like a tape library to Tivoli Storage Manager. The VTL can emulate many types of tape drives and tape libraries. We recommend setting up the VTL with the following emulation mode:
TSM 5.5.1 and later versions including TSM 6.1.x
For a new installation, we recommend
- Library type - native mode with product identification "NETAPP VTL"
- Drive type - Sun StorageTek T10000A or IBM Ultrium-TD4 on AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows.
- Also contact NetApp for other supported library and drive type configurations
TSM 5.5.0
- Contact NetApp for supported Library and Drive type configurations
- For TSM 5.3 or 5.4 customers, contact NetApp before upgrading the TSM server to version 5.5.

TSM 5.4.3
For a new installation, we recommend
- Library type - native mode with product identification "NETAPP VTL"
- Drive type - Sun StorageTek T10000A
- Also contact NetApp for other supported library and drive type configurations
TSM 5.4.2 and earlier
- Contact NetApp for supported Library and Drive type configurations

For all TSM versions
TSM does not support NetApp NearStore VTL with the following drive emulation mode:
- All HP LTO drives
- All Quantum DLT and SDLT drives
- All Sony AIT drives
- Sun StorageTek 9840 and 9940 drives
NetApp NearStore VTL has also been validated through the IBM Ready for Tivoli program. Contact the vendor for validated configuration. Visit the following link for more information:
Notes
1. Barcodes are supported on the virtual tapes. We recommend using these barcodes as volume names for Tivoli Storage Manager.
2. ELEMent=AUTODetect in the DEFINE/UPDATE DRIVE command is supported.
3. If there is no physical tape drive attached to the VTL, the CHECKOUT LIBVOLUME command with REMOVE=BULK is not supported.
4. Device identifications and firmware levels
Validated with Tivoli Storage Manager version 5.4.3
- Library ID : NETAPP VTL --- Firmware : 0001
Drive ID : STK T10000A --- Firmware : 022C
Validated with Tivoli Storage Manager version 5.5.1
(on AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows)
- Library ID : NETAPP VTL --- Firmware : 0001 VTL OS version 5.6 P1
Drive ID : IBM Ultrium-TD4 --- VTL OS version 5.6 P1
5. Application Managed Encryption is not supported. When the emulated drive is IBM Ultrium-TD4, the DRIVEEncryption parameter for the device class (DEVCLASS) must be set to "ALLOW".
Library and drive may require different minimum Tivoli Storage Manager levels. Therefore, ensure that both library and drive hardware are supported. See "Supported Devices for AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Windows" or "Supported Devices for Linux" for minimum supported version levels and platforms for these devices.
More information regarding device configuration is available in the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Guide, which can be found in the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager information center.
