Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server V6.1.0                               *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Alarm threads that have not yet ceased *
    * during server shutdown can see *
    *                      NoClassDefFoundErrors when attempting   *
    * to write to FFDC. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    During server shutdown, it is possible for active Alarm
    threads to attempt to write to FFDC after the FFDC component
    has stopped. Because the component is no longer active, the
    logging attempt fails with a NoClassDefFoundError.

Problem conclusion

  • Logic has been added to the Alarm to use alternate logging
    when FFDC is unavailable.

    APAR PM20979 is currently targeted for inclusion in
    Service Level (Fix Pack) 6.1.0.37 of WebSphere
    Application Server V6.1.
