Error description
A WebSphere Application Server for z/OS controller region may hang when it is running near capacity and is joining global transactions as a subordinate to another OTS compliant application server. This can occur when distributing EJBs between two application servers, and the EJBs are configured to participate in the same global transaction. When viewing an SVC dump of the hung controller region, the traceback of many of the controller region threads will show com/ibm/ws390/tx/WorkRequestDispatcher.dispatch() at the bottom of the stack, and com/ibm/ws390/orb/ClientDelegate.invokeRequestCFW() at the top of the stack. An example stack trace is shown below: com/ibm/ws390/orb/ClientDelegate.invokeRequestCFW ClientDelegate.java com/ibm/ws390/orb/ClientDelegate.commonInvoke ClientDelegate.java:1016 com/ibm/ws390/orb/ClientDelegate.invoke ClientDelegate.java:863 org/omg/CORBA/portable/ObjectImpl._invoke ObjectImpl.java:484 ....... ....... com/ibm/ws390/tx/WorkRequestDispatcher.dispatchExit WorkRequestDispatcher.java:538 com/ibm/ws390/tx/WorkRequestDispatcher.dispatch WorkRequestDispatcher.java:108

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V7.0 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: WebSphere Application Server for * * z/OS stops processing requests when * * running near capacity and when * * joining a global transaction with * * another OTS compliant application * * server. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** WebSphere Application Server for z/OS may stop processing requests when the server is running near capacity and is also joining global transactions originating from another OTS compliant application server. During the transaction join, the controller region may use up all of its worker threads communicating with the application server originating the transaction. This leaves no threads for the WebSphere Application Server to use to process application requests.
Problem conclusion
Code was added to prevent transaction join processing from using all of the controller region worker threads. The following minor codes and abend codes were added to the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS as a result of APAR PK93210: APAR PKPK93210 requires changes to documentation. NOTE: Periodically, we refresh the documentation on our Web site, so the changes might have been made before you read this text. To access the latest on-line documentation, go to the product library page at: http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/library A change to the z/OS version of the WebSphere Application Server Version 7.0 Information Center will be made to add the following minor codes: C9C21A9D Explanation: IBM Internal Only Suggested Action: For support, look up problem determination information on WebSphere Application Server eSupport page at: http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/zos_os390/support C9C21A9E Explanation: IBM Internal Only Suggested Action: For support, look up problem determination information on WebSphere Application Server eSupport page at: http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/zos_os390/support C9C21A9F Explanation: IBM Internal Only Suggested Action: For support, look up problem determination information on WebSphere Application Server eSupport page at: http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/zos_os390/support A change to the z/OS version of the WebSphere Application Server Version 7.0 Information Center will be made to add the follwoing abend codes: Abend Code: EC3 Abend Reason: 06110001 Explanation: A call to RRS service ATREINT5 or ATR4EINT returned a UR_STATE_ERROR return code. The context which WebSphere was trying to express interest in is owned by the servant region which is being terminated with this abend reason code. The cause of the UR_STATE_ERROR is typically a previous abend in this same servant region, which can cause the context to end abnormally, or an abend in another resource manager which switched the context onto a task in its address space using the CTXSWCH service. Suggested Action: WebSphere terminates the servant region owning the context with this abend and reason code. Look for previous abends and/or error messages in the job log for this servant region, and in the job log for any resource managers that this servant region connects to. In most cases, the UR_STATE_ERROR can be prevented by correcting the cause of the initial abend and/or error condition. For further assistance look up problem determination information on WebSphere Application Server eSupport page at: http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/zos_os390/support APAR PK93210 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.7 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
