Error description

When a WebSphere Application Server for z/OS joins a
distributed transaction started by another application
server, and the server is running near capacity, the workload
may appear to hang.  No further transactions can complete
until the hung application server is restarted.

When processing distributed transactions, the transaction
protocol messages sent between servers (such as prepare and
commit) are processed by WebSphere controller region worker
threads.  Each protocol message may require one or more
additional worker threads to complete.  In some cases, each
controller region worker thread was processing a protocol
message, leaving no additional worker threads.  If each of
these protocol messages requires an additional worker thread
to complete, the server will stop processing work until each
of these protocol message requests times out.

Problem conclusion

Code was added to prevent the controller region from requiring
additional worker threads to process transaction protocol
messages.

APAR PK92897 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.7 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
