Error description
When STOP is issued for the application server, the servant comes down, but controller abends with SA03. This behavior was triggered by configuring memory-to-memory session replication. The dump of SA03 shows 8 threads still up in the controller. The last one in the list (ip summ format) is the one that caused the problem. Based on a console dump taken right before STOP was issued, the last thread in the SA03 dump was a daemon thread and had the following traceback: TCB bca158 caa 2aa4fbd8 pthread_id db98f200000005c Thread-28 J9VMThread 341c1000 (daemon) Dsa Entry Offset Function --- ----- ------ -------- 2aa50f68 05a473c0 00001986 CEEOPCW 2aa50da8 05acf6f8 0000006e CEEVH2OS 34df2da0 0d828ee8 00000054 pthread_cond_wait 34df2e20 13ddefe8 00000410 monitor_wait 34df2f00 13de2598 00000018 j9thread_monitor_wait_interruptable 34df2f80 7be62f18 00000354 jclCallMonitorWaitInterruptable 34df3040 7cd218e8 ff0eea56 RUNJAVATHREAD 34df32c0 7cd7b618 000000ae javaProtectedThreadProc 34df3340 7cb15a78 000002ca j9sig_protect 34df3600 7cd7be20 00000054 javaThreadProc 34df3680 13dde958 00000472 thread_wrapper 34df3720 05ad0068 000011fa CEEVROND 2ae11ee0 00dc56b8 000008f8 CEEOPCMM Java stack: ----------- Method Location ------ java/lang/Object.wait java/lang/Object.wait com/ibm/ws/drs/ws390/DRSControllerInstanceWrapper.run java/lang/Thread.run Note: the server does come down completely regardless of this abend.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of WebSphere Application Server * * V7.0 for z/OS using Data Replication * * Services (DRS). * * * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When the application is shutdown an * * ABENDA03/ABENDSA03 occurs because * * one or more daemon DRS threads are * * not shutting down. * * * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** DRS uses a daemon thread that waits for incoming requests. The thread is interupted during the shutdown but the thread resumes waiting in the while loop.
Problem conclusion
A flag has been defined that is set when the runtime component shutsdown the DRS service. This flag is checked during each loop iteration and exits if a shutdown has been initiated. APAR PK82831 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.3 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
