Problem
This technote provides details for an issue that can occur in IBM Rational Team Concert where Arabic and Hebrew text will be displayed left justified.
Symptom
Arabic and Hebrew text will be shown left justified. Entry of text in these languages will be the same as regular text entry throughout the user interface and will not take the context of the text being entered (such as entering a path) into account. Right-to-left mode will not be rendered correctly.
Text is justified according to browser or Eclipse settings rather than by the text in the control.
If an Arabic or Hebrew paragraph is displayed in a browser where justification is set for left to right, the paragraph will be left justified although it should be read from right to left.
This will also be an issue for Farsi and Urdu.
Cause
Rational Team Concert does not currently support right-to-left direction on the Web or Eclipse clients. Also browsers do not currently have support for paragraph level justification, so a control will be entirely right or left justified.
Rational Team Concert does process strings for display where the separators might be ambiguous to the operating system. Rational Team Concert does not have any custom controls for the entry or display of bidirectional text.
For example, a path or URL has segments that are well defined by \ or / and will have Unicode direction markers placed on one or both sides of the separator characters to ensure correct display.
Environment
All browsers and the Eclipse client on Microsoft Windows. On Linux/GTK text input justification is determined by the operating system and is more frequently correct. The text direction in Firefox is set using the bidi.browser.ui preference.
Diagnosing The Problem
Right-to-left text will be left justified and separators will not be shown in the control in the order they are typed.
Resolving The Problem
There is a cosmetic issue identified on jazz.net in work item 75835, but the text can still be read.
This problem will remain until the above work item is fixed.
