What is IBM Installation Factory
With the IBM Installation Factory for WebSphere Application Server, installing and configuring WebSphere Application Server requires just one step. The Installation Factory creates turn-key install packages for installing IBM WebSphere Application Server in a reliable and repeatable way, tailored to your specific needs.

Simply install the customized installation package (CIP) created by the Installation Factory; the following steps are performed automatically by the CIP you created:
  • Installs the shipped version of the product.
  • Installs the current Fix Pack.
  • Installs an SDK, Java™ technology edition Fix Pack.
  • Installs one or more interim fixes as needed.
  • Creates and configures one or more profiles.
  • Deploys enterprise applications.

The Installation Factory combines the installation image for a version or release of a WebSphere software product with optional assets to create a CIP. In addition, the Installation Factory can combine multiple CIPs or WebSphere Application Server Installation images into a single Integrated Installation Package (IIP). Integrated Install Packages allow a user to install multiple install packages in a single install session instead of having to install them independently one at a time. The Installation Factory combines the installation image for a version or release of a WebSphere software product with optional assets to create a CIP.

Optional assets can include any of the following components:
  • Applicable maintenance packages.

  • Scripts or Java classes to be run during install and uninstall, or profile creation and deletion.

  • Enterprise application archive (EAR) files for applications that you intend to deploy with default deployment options on stand-alone application server profiles.

  • A configuration archive (CAR) file for cloning a stand-alone application server profile from a previously installed and customized stand-alone application server.

  • Additional files such as EAR files that you intend to deploy with customized options using a script that you have written.

A required asset may be the WebSphere Application Server installation image, the WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for Web Services installation image or the WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for EJB 3.0 image. The WebSphere Application Server Installation image is available on the product disc or in a downloaded image from the Passport Advantage site. The WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for Web Services and the WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for EJB 3.0 installation images are available as download images.

Installation Factory consists of both a graphical user interface (GUI) tool (the ifgui command in the bin directory) and a command-line interface tool (the ifcli command). Use the Installation Factory GUI to create a build definition file, which is an XML document that specifies how to build the CIP (for example, where to find the Fix Pack you plan to use). You can generate the CIP directly from within the GUI or you can simply choose to save the build definition file and then generate the CIP outside of the GUI using the provided command-line interface tool.

The CIP you create will contian an installation program that is very similar to the one used by original product image. This installation program can be used to install the CIP either interactively, using the installation wizard, or silently. Further, the CIP can perform a new scratch install of the application server, or it can be applied against an existing installation of the application server. In either case, the resulting installation is at the maintenance level you require, is configured as required, and any applications you have provided will be deployed.

About Installation Factory V7.0.0.19

IBM WebSphere Installation Factory Version 7.0.0.19 is backwards compatible. You can use it to create WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1 CIPs and IIPs in addition to Version 7.0 packages. The following operations are new features introduced in Version 7.0 and are unavailable when creating Version 6.1 installation packages:
  • Selecting English-only language packs
  • Installation image spanning as input to a CIP or IIP or as a spanned CIP output
  • Including Business Level Applications in your CIP

Installation Factory V7.0.0.19 can be downloaded from the IBM Installation Factory V7.0 download page.

Space requirements

The Installation Factory requires approximately 600 MB of system temporary space (such as /tmp directory on Linux or UNIX) for the processing engine to merge the installation image with maintenance packages.

Provide adequate disk space for the installation image, the maintenance packages, and the customized installation package. Space requirements vary depending on what you are installing. The size of each download is available on the Support site.

For a Fix Pack, you need approximately 600 MB of free space in the system temporary directory (typically /tmp on a Linux or UNIX system) and another 600 MB in the file system that hosts the WebSphere Application Server image (typically /usr or /opt on a Linux or UNIX platform), or approximately 1.2 GB of free space on the disk drive where you are installing on a Windows platform.

Verify that the free space is available before beginning the installation.

Steps for installing and using Installation Factory V7.0.0.19
Download the packed code for your operating system from the IBM Installation Factory V7.0 download page. Users who wish to use Installation Factory for WebSphere Application Server V6.1 releases to create a Customized Installation Package (CIP) for WebSphere Application Server, a Web Services Feature Pack or an EJB 3.0 Feature Pack are recommended to use the latest version of Installation Factory, and are required to use at least the 6.1.0.13 version of Installation Factory.

Unpack the file before getting started using the Installation Factory. Note that the tar command which comes with some operating systems may have a path length limitation that can affect the unpacking of Installation Factory. If you encounter problems while unpacking an Installation Factory tar file, try using the latest version of GNU tar.

The Installation Factory has two major components:
  • The Installation Factory GUI (the ifgui command in the bin directory)

Use the ifgui command to start the Installation Factory GUI. Two wizards in the GUI help you create the build definition file.

  • The command-line interface tool (the ifcli command)

Use the ifcli command on the target operating system to build a customized installation package for that type of operating system.

A possibility exists that you might run the two components on two separate machines. If so, you must download the proper Installation Factory code for each operating system.

Tested systems that support the Installation Factory GUI (ifgui)* include:
  • AIX
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows 2003 **
  • Solaris
  • Linux RHEL
  • Linux SLES
  • HP-UX PA-RISC

* Installation Factory uses a version of IBM Eclipse Software Development Kit (SDK) which supports 64-bit operating systems in headless mode only (no graphical user interface). As a result, the ifgui command is not available on 64-bit operating systems. Users can use the ifcli command instead.

**Perform the following procedure to use the Help system on Windows 2003 systems:
  1. Open the Internet Explorer Web browser.

  2. Click File > Add this site to > Local Internet Zone.

  3. Click Add to add http://127.0.0.1.
  4. Click Close.

  5. Close Internet Explorer.

  6. Launch the ifgui Help.

The ifcli command runs on the following distributed operating systems and hardware platforms:
