Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is not compatible with versions of WebSphere Application Server prior to version 6.1

Question & Answer

Question

Do IBM WebSphere Application Server versions prior to V6.1 work with Microsoft SQL Server 2005?

Answer

WebSphere Application Server versions prior to V6.1 were written to be compatible with the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. However, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is not fully forward compatible from Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and therefore WebSphere Application Server versions prior to V6.1 are not fully compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

The Application Server uses SQL syntax for table lock hints that is valid on Microsoft SQL Server 2000, but no longer valid in Microsoft SQL Server 2005. This affects generated code for CMP, the Scheduler, and applications that specify table lock hints directly.

Additionally, the JDBC driver shipped with the Application Server prior to V6.0.2.25 and V5.1.1.17 is not capable of connectivity to the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database.

In order to minimize these incompatibilities, customers who use the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database with WebSphere Application Server versions prior to V6.1 should move to V6.0.2.25+ or V5.1.1.17+ and run in SQL Server 2000 compatibility mode.
