Troubleshooting
Problem
Here are the directions to find IBM MQ error logs.
Resolving The Problem
The messages that are recorded in the error logs and job logs are some of the most important information that you can provide when you report an IBM MQ problem.
Select one of the following platforms to find the location of the IBM MQ error logs:
HPE NonStop
IBM i
UNIX® and Linux®
Windows®
z/OS®
HPE NonStop
The IBM MQ for HPE NonStop (previously known as HP NSS) error logs are located in the following directories:
/var/mqm/errors
/var/mqm/qmgrs/<qmname>/errors
The error log files are named: AMQERR01.LOG, AMQERR02.LOG, and AMQERR03.LOG.
Notes:
- If the queue manager name is not known, then the error message is written to an error log file in the errors subdirectory. For example, if the default prefix is /usr/ibm/wmq/GA/var/mqm, the error message is written to an error log file in the directory /usr/ibm/wmq/GA/var/mqm/errors.
- If the queue manager name is known, then the error message is written to an error log file in the queue manager’s errors directory.
IBM i
The IBM MQ for IBM i error logs are located in the following directories:
/QIBM/UserData/mqm/errors
/QIBM/UserData/mqm/qmgrs/<queueManagerName>/errors
The error log files are named: AMQERR01.LOG, AMQERR02.LOG, and AMQERR03.LOG.
UNIX and Linux
The IBM MQ for UNIX error logs are located in the following directories:
The IBM MQ for UNIX error logs are located in the following directories:
/var/mqm/errors
/var/mqm/qmgrs/<queueManagerName>/errors
The error log files are named: AMQERR01.LOG, AMQERR02.LOG, and AMQERR03.LOG.
+ Note about Multi-Instance queue managers.
The error logs for a multi-instance queue manager are located in subdirectory "errors" of the directory mentioned in the "DataPath" specified in the stanza for the queue manager in the /var/mqm/mqs.ini file, which can be obtained by the IBM MQ utility "dspmqinf".
For example, the dspmqinf output for queue manager named QMGRMI:
$ dspmqinf QMGRMI
QueueManager:
Name=QMGRMI
Directory=QMGRMI
Prefix=/var/mqm
DataPath=/910MI/qmdata/QMGRMI
.
The error logs will be located in the subdirectory
/910MI/qmdata/QMGRMI/errors
Windows
The IBM MQ for Windows error logs are located in the following directories.
This is the default directory path; however, it might have been changed at installation time.
C:\ProgramData\IBM\MQ\errors

C:\ProgramData\IBM\MQ\errors
C:\ProgramData\IBM\MQ\qmgrs\<queueManagerName>\errors
The error log files are named: AMQERR01.LOG, AMQERR02.LOG, and AMQERR03.LOG.
+ Note about Multi-Instance queue managers.
The error logs for a multi-instance queue manager are located in subdirectory "errors" of the directory mentioned in the "DataPath" specified in the stanza for QueueManager by using the dspmqinf command.
For example, the dspmqinf output for queue manager named TEST:
dspmqinf TEST
QueueManager:
Name=TEST
Directory=TEST
Prefix=C:\ProgramData\IBM\MQ
DataPath=share\\data\\TEST
If share is \\wmq.ibm.com\MQHA in the UNC format, the error logs are located in path: \\wmq.ibm.com\MQHA\data\TEST\errors
The error log files are named: AMQERR01.LOG, AMQERR02.LOG, and AMQERR03.LOG.
