Error description

  • /var/mqm/errors became filled up because of numerous FDC
    records with details like this.

    Probe Id :- HL062054
    Component :- mqlCreateExtent
    Major Errorcode :- hrcE_MQLO_DISK
    MQM Function Stack
    zmuThreadMain
    zmuLogFormatTask
    mqlpgart
    mqlCreateExtent
    xcsFFST

Other FDCs also seen on this occasion:

    HL049110/mqlpgart hrcE_MQLO_DISK
    HL077079/mqlReadFormatResponse hrcE_MQLO_DISK
    HL047028/mqlAddLogFile hrcE_MQLO_DISK

The original cause of these problems was actually outside
WebSphere MQ, in the disk subsystem. However, WebSphere MQ
responded by writing more FDCs than was necessary, leading to
secondary problems because of /var/mqm/errors filling up.

Local fix

  • Ensure adequate system space for linear logs and ensure disk
management by clearing out old log files.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    USERS AFFECTED:
Users who experience failures in their disk subsystem (this is
    very rare).

    Platforms affected:
All Distributed (iSeries, all Unix and Windows)
    ****************************************************************
    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
WebSphere MQ's response to the error condition was correctly to
write FDC records to aid problem determination. However, this
became a secondary problem because of the large quantity of
information being written to /var/mqm/errors. It is still
correct to write FDC records, but the quantity should be
    reduced.

Problem conclusion

  • A safety mechanism has been added to prevent this error being
written too many times. An FDC record will only be written once
    per hour, at maximum.
