Error description

  • WebSphere MQ MFT Agent writes useful information to the Agent's
Event Log. When the initial Event Log:

      output0.log

reaches it's maximum size, the Log is renamed to be called:

      output1.log

and a new output0.log file is created. However, no more
information is written to the new file until the Agent is
    stopped and restarted.

    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Every Managed File Transfer agent has it's own event log
(output.log), which it uses to store informational messages, as
well as details of any errors that the agent has encountered.
The number of files used to hold the event log, as well as the
size of each file, is controlled by the agent properties:

    - outputLogFiles
    - outputLogSize

The current event log file is called output0.log file. When this
file is full, the file is copied into a historical file called
output1.log and a new output0.log file is created.

Details of the two properties mentioned above can be found in
    the:

      The agent.properties file

topic in the WebSphere MQ V7.5 and MQ V8 sections of IBM
Knowledge Center. The URI for these topics is shown below:

    MQ V8.0
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSFKSJ_8.0.0/com.i
    bm.wmqfte.doc/properties.htm

When an agent was started, a check was made to see if the
current event log file output0.log already existed. If it did,
then the file was opened - otherwise a new file was created.

The agent then stored an internal reference to the output0.log
file, which it used whenever it needed to log something to it.

When the output0.log file had reached it's maximum size (as
specified by the outputLogSize property). the agent:

    - Closed the existing output0.log file.
    - Renamed the output0.log file so that it was called output1.log
(if the output1.log file already existed, it was renamed to
    output2.log, and so on).
    - Created and opened a new output0.log file.

However, the internal reference to the original output0.log file
was not updated. This meant that whenever the agent needed to
log an informational or error message, it would try to write the
message to the original output0.log file which had now been
closed. This resulted in the message being lost and not being
written out to the event log.

Problem conclusion

  • Managed File Transfer agents have now been updated so that when
a new output0.log file is created and opened, the internal
reference to the original output0.log file is replaced and
updated with a reference to the new one. This ensures that any
new informational or error messages are written to the event log
    as expected.
