IC69881: WEBSPHERE MQ TRACE CAN GENERATE A FAULT WHEN AN APPLICATION PASSES OLDER MQOD STRUCTURE VERSIONS TO MQI MQOPEN/MQPUT1 CALL

Error description

  • When WebSphere MQ trace traces the MQOD parameter passed to MQI
MQOPEN or MQPUT1 calls, it records the full contents of the
structure without regard to their version. For example, if an
application passes a version 2 MQOD to MQOPEN, the trace will
treat the MQOD as if it were the current version. The trace
may generate a fault if the memory after the end of the version
    2 MQOD is not allocated.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    USERS AFFECTED:
All users who enable trace and supply MQOD structures less than
the current version. This especially applies to .Net customers
as the MQ .Net layer starts with a version 1 structure and only
changes the version field when newer MQOD fields are used.

    Platforms affected:
All Distributed (iSeries, all Unix and Windows)
    ****************************************************************
    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
When an MQOD structure is traced, the data was dumped up as the
size of the current MQOD structure size. Should a smaller,
earlier version structure be supplied, MQ would reference
beyond the end of that structure during the tracing. Should the
structure be near a page boundary, meaning that the additional
data being referenced was non-readable, then an exception will
    occur.

Problem conclusion

  • The MQ trace macro for the MQOD structure has been modified to
take into account the version field when deciding what size of
    data to trace.
