Error description

  • The Operations Console EngMonApp process stops and can not be
restarted, showing the log error: "Unable to delete the event
run file..."Conversely, the EngMonApp process will start up, but
will loop round forever, not processing any event files, with a
log error: "The events subdirectory that previously existed no
    longer exists: ..."

Both these issues are caused by file permission issues on the
    Server/DSODB/event directory and subdirectories.
These directories should be readable and writeable by the
datastage user group, and jobs should be run by a member of that
    datastage user group.
If jobs are run by another user then they can create event
subsdirectories or event files that the EngMonApp does not have
access to. This can cause EngMonApp to stop, because it cannot
    delete any event files.

If, for some reason the directories do not have the permissions
as installed, and EngMonApp does not have sufficient access to
the directories then it can start up but loop forever trying to
process files that it does not have access to.

Both of these cases are invalid as the files should have the
installed permissions and jobs should be run by a user in the
    datastage group.
However, for the first problem, EngMonApp should be changed to
help the user determine what the actual problem is by displaying
the current users group permissions and the permissions on the
    files.
For the second problem EngMonApp shoul dbe changed to avoid
looping forever and to log a more suitable error message to
    determine the problem.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    USERS AFFECTED:
Users of Operations Console with non-standard users running jobs
such that the datastage user group does not have access to the
    created event files.
    ****************************************************************
    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
If the datastage user group does not have access to read and
write all event directories and files then the Ops Console
EngMonApp application will not start or will not run correctly.
In some cases EngMonApp will fail immediately and in some cases
it will go into a tight loop creating very large log files. This
is because it cannot process and then delete the event files.
    ****************************************************************
    RECOMMENDATION:
    Apply patch or fix pack.
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • EngMonApp still cannot run successfully without appropriate
access permissions for the datastage user group, but it will now
always fail rather than running in a tight loop and will include
more information in the logs to help determine the problem.
