JR35312: INTERMITTENT JOB CRASHES WHERE A /TMP/SELECT* FILE GROWS TOO LARGE

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Intermittent job crashes where a /tmp/select* file grows until
  the partition is full during initialization of a phantom DSD.RUN
  process.  DSD.RUN is at the point of selecting files in /tmp to
  clean up any which are of the form <itag>.<project>.<jobname>*
  (memory mapped files related to row buffering).
  

Local fix

• Select different directory location than /tmp using the env
  variable TEMP
  
  This fix is included in 8.0.1 fixpack 3
  

Problem summary

  USERS AFFECTED:
  Problem seen on AIX when running a BASIC SELECT on /tmp
  directory.
  ****************************************************************
  PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
  The BASIC code which performs a SELECT on /tmp (by default) at
  startup of a DataStage job to clean up memory mapped files can
  get into an infinite loop of writing files to the select list
  (selectxxxxxxx).
  ****************************************************************
  RECOMMENDATION:
  Patched at 8.1 AIX.  Request a patch on other
  platforms/releases.
  ****************************************************************
  

Problem conclusion

• The name of a select list file should be unique but was only
  based on 5 digits of the process id.  Fixed the naming
  convention to guarantee uniqueness by basing the select file
  name on 10 digits of a pid plus a timestamp.
