APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Bounded length fields use storage equal to their max length
instead of the actual data length, causing persistent datasets
to use more storage than necessary.

Local fix

  • This fix is included in 8.0.1 fixpack 3

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    USERS AFFECTED:
Users of parallel jobs in InformationServer 7.x and above.
    ****************************************************************
    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Bounded length fields in parallel jobs are treated as fixed
length for performance reasons. This can make storing
persistent datasets take up much more storage on disk than the
    actual data requires.
    ****************************************************************
    RECOMMENDATION:
    Install patch JR33508
This change is included in 8.1 Fix Pack 1.

Problem conclusion

  • An environment variable was added APT_COMPRESS_BOUNDED_FIELDS.
When set bounded length fields will be modified into variable
length for disk storage and then back to bounded length when
read from disk. Depending on the record schema this can result
in a large savings in the size of the persistent data files.
Itdoes require extra processing time during the reading and
writing of the data files. This is the trade off for the space
reduction. This environment variable should only be set when
creating new datasets, it should not be set when appending to
    existing datasets.
