Restoring NDMP node file system to an alternate NAS Filer.

Question & Answer

Question

What is the procedure to restore a file system that was backed up on NAS Filer(A), to alternate NAS Filer(B).

Answer

The following instructions provide a procedure to restore a NAS filer file system to an alternate NAS Filer.

  1. Both NAS Filers should be the same make such as Netapp. If the they are different models or running at different OS levels check with the filer vendor to verify if the restore is possible.
  2. The DATAMOVER definition for Filer(A) will need to be updated to the IP address, and low level address currently used to connect with Filer(B). Also the User-id and password of Filer(A) will need to be updated to use the same User-id, and password of Filer(B).
  3. The tape drive paths for Filer(A), need to be updated to use the tape drive paths defined for Filer(B).
  4. The RESTORE NODE operation can be performed now by using the node name for Filer(A). Caution should be used to make sure the file system name on Filer(A) is unique and not the same as Filer(B). This is to ensure that the data being restore for Filer(A), does not over write data owned by Filer(B). If Filer(A) and Filer(B), use identical file system names then create a new destination file space on Filer(B), to hold the file system being restored from Filer(A).

Note: Consult the Tivoli Storage Manager Reference Guide for RESTORE NODE command usage and options.
