Extending Tivoli Storage Manager server database filesystems on AIX.

Question & Answer

Question

Can I grow existing Tivoli Storage Manager database filesystems using 'chfs' utility instead of creating new filesystems?

Answer

The documented procedure for adding additional database space to the Tivoli Storage Manager server can be found here:

Increasing the size of the database

Increasing the size of the database

Increasing the size of the database

This process includes creating new filesystems and defining them to the back-end DB2 database engine via the Tivoli Storage Manager EXTEND DBSPACE command.

Administrators can alternatively grow any pre-existing filesystems that are being used as Tivoli Storage Manager database directories by using the AIX chfs utility.

There are several considerations and recommendations that need to be understood prior to using the chfs command to alter an existing filesystem size:

  • DB2 typically prefers database filesystems that are the same size. If you have multiple DB filesystems, they should be grown equally - for example, grow 15 database filesystems by 682MB instead of just one of the filesystems by 10GB.
  • Ensure that you have adequate space to actually grow the filesystems into before issuing the chfs command.
  • Ensure that you have taken a full Tivoli Storage Manager database backup before issuing the chfs command as a protection mechanism. Also ensure you have the volume history file stored in a safe location.
  • Issue the chfs command only with Tivoli Storage manager and DB2 stopped as a protection mechanism.
