Client schedule fails with return code 12 and ANS8010E error

Troubleshooting


Problem

A Tivoli Storage Manager client logs the ANS8010E error during its schedule backup as a result the schedule event is reported as failed.

Symptom

The following error is logged in the dsmerror.log of the client :

ANS8010E An attempt to backup or archive a file has exceed the maximum number of retries.

The schedule is then reported as failed in the dsmsched.log file of the client :

ANS1512E Scheduled event 'MY_SCHED_BKUP' failed. Return code = 12.

Diagnosing The Problem

Examine the client dsmsched.log file for network error. For example :

Examine the Tivoli Storage Manager server activity log for errors logged when the client logs the ANS1809W. For example :

2013-06-25 22:20:59 ANR0480W Session 1234 for node MYPC (WinNT) terminated - connection with client severed. (SESSION: 1234)

In this case, the client tries to backup the "c:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\W32X86\3\hpcur115.dll" file but fails because of network error. The client being network fault tolerant (ANS1809W) is able to reconnect to the server. The client then retries to backup the file up to a maximum of four (4) times (depending on the changingretries client option value). On each subsequent retry, the backup operation again fails because of a network error. After four (4) failed attempts to backup the file, the client logs the ANS8010E error message which sets the return code of the scheduled backup to 12 and which sets the status of the schedule event to "failed".

Resolving The Problem

In this case, the presence of the ANS1809W error on the client side and the ANR0480W error on the server side indicates that neither the client nor the server closed the network connection. Rather, the connection was dropped by the network.

Consult your network team to resolve network errors between the client machine and the server machine. Once the network errors are resolved, the ANS1809 and ANS8010E errors should no longer be logged on the client side, the ANR0480W error should no longer be logged on the server side and the schedule backup should no longer be reported as failed.
