IBM and SAP create the world’s largest SAP HANA system

100 terabytes of main memory

There was big news on stage at SAPPHIRE NOW Orlando 2012 on Wednesday, May 16 - a 100TB SAP HANA system! That system was implemented on IBM System x3850 X5 servers providing 100TB of main memory. IBM Lab Services did the work in record time working with the SAP Co-Location Center in Santa Clara, CA.

Here’s how it unfolded at SAPPHIRE NOW Orlando.

On Tuesday:
SAP PartnerEdge rep Maria Squicciarini filmed Rich Travis, IBM Client Technical Specialist, the day before the SAP Executive keynotes for a bit of the back-story. Listen to a preview from Rich:

On Wednesday morning:
Hasso Plattner, SAP Founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, was on-stage for his keynote and cut to the data center at the SAP Co-Location center in Santa Clara, CA where Wesley Mukai, SAP VP of CTO Projects and System Engineering, showcases the 100TB SAP HANA system. And then Hasso Plattner wraps up by saying the system is big enough to run the eight (8) largest SAP customers!

Here’s that footage:

A few minutes later in Hasso Plattner’s keynote, he tells the audience whose hardware that 100TB system is running on.
“Could you see who the manufacturer was? – Well it was IBM. Thank you to the folks of IBM!"
"We asked IBM: Can you build such a computer? And they said yes. Can you ship such a computer? And they said yes. And can it be a decent price? And they said yes.”

Here’s that footage:

Next, Vishal Sikka, SAP Head of Technology and Innovation and Member of the SAP Executive Board, took the stage at SAPPHIRE NOW Orlando right after Hasso Plattner. Vishal also talked about the 100TB SAP HANA system and thanked IBM.
"Something we are incredibly proud of, testing the limits of how far we can go, and last month we had the idea to put together the largest in-memory system that has ever been assembled and our friends at IBM helped us build this. I have to thank our partners at IBM - Steve Mills and Ambuj Goyal and their teams."
