TEXT: SMART IS... Genetic insights gained through analytics.
The Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute is a research hospital in Bologna, Italy
Specializing in the causation and treatment of rare hereditary skeletal diseases
Through a pedigree analytics platform integrating genomic data and family history.
Marina Mordenti: Smarter healthcare can be collecting data, sharing data and pedigree analytics
and altogether better way of life for the patients.
We started working with a specific disease which is multiple osteochondromas and hereditary
multiple exostoses. Patients affected by this disease have something like mushrooms at the end
of the bones these mushrooms transform into malignant compart and become chondrosarcomas.
Altogether they are a big group of patients, so we have decided to organize something like
database for collecting all the data because there is nothing for skeletal disease.
We have also organized in working with another hospital in Bologna, something like a network
that is a "Hub & Spoke" network of the hospital in the region, because we think that there is a
strong link between the doctors and the researchers.
It's important to share and collect the data, so we decided talking also with other genetic unit in
our region to organize something that can be able to gather all the data together.
We have organized an instrument that the name is Pedigree Analytics that's able to investigate
the correlation between the genotype and phenotype. We can detect the chondrosarcoma before,
so we can treat it and it's better for the patient.
Another important tool of this software is for imaging exchange, sharing data, easier to perform
diagnosis because for diagnosis, there are required less x-rays, less ultrasounds, CT scan and so
on. This can reduce 60% usage of imaging, so there is less cost for the Italian healthcare
system.
In our approach, we think that the patient is the center of this type of analysis. Medical genetic
unit and all the hospital are very excited in working and doing something new and trying to
increase the knowledge

Getting Smarter
Rizzoli got smarter by using analytics and visualization to help
them predict disease progression, allowing researchers and doctors to
collaborate on the best course of action for the client.
- Instrumented: The Rizzoli solution extracts and integrates clinical, genomic and medical imaging data into a rich, granular dataset.
- Interconnected: Open interfaces enable the Rizzoli solution to share data with other institutions and add new services, content sources and research partners.
- Intelligent: Advanced algorithms identify correlation patterns within genotype and phenotype data to guide deeper investigation by researchers.
