El conocimiento necesario para identificar, transformar y progresar

IBM Health Information Exchange (en inglés)

The challenge

Meeting the demand for personalized care

Healthcare enterprises and oversight bodies need greater visibility into patient health histories to meet growing consumer demand for more personalized care. Industry leaders agree that better information-sharing and collaboration are required to optimize care and improve efficiency. But they face challenges such as sharing clinical data among healthcare entities using different technology. Securing data exchange and monitoring access to patient data. And identifying a patient across different institutions.

The solution

A health system with the consumer at the center

The healthcare industry is a complex network of processes and entities. Collaborative, coordinated health systems—with the consumer at the center—help to ensure that care decisions meet demands for a more personalized healthcare experience. Electronic health information systems must be able to identify, aggregate and transmit information to provide efficiencies in data collection and facilitate the creation of electronic health records (EHRs).

The IBM® Health Information Exchange collects, identifies and aggregates patient information from all source systems. The repository and registry engine of the Health Information Exchange enables consumers, providers, healthcare enterprises and oversight bodies to submit, query and retrieve the requisite data—from medical history to physician notes. The exchange exploits Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) integration profiles to help ensure all information is associated with the right patient and made readily accessible, interconnecting the exchange with any source and consumer system.

All of this imbues intelligence in the system as all stakeholders access a comprehensive view of patients to make better decisions—which translates to better patient care at reduced costs, and eventual harmonization of the healthcare processes in a community context.

The benefits

Sharing information from any source to any system

The IBM Health Information Exchange exploits IHE integration profiles and proven, scalable IBM middleware to help:

  • Enable sharing of documents and images among healthcare enterprises, regardless of source, location or format in support of improved patient care.
  • Serve as a data repository and searchable registry of clinical documents.
  • Record audit events generated by all exchange interactions.
  • Establish a standards-based, data-sharing methodology vital to the creation and adoption of EHRs.

The specifics

IBM software—the heart of Health Information Exchange

The IBM Health Information Exchange is built on a flexible, service oriented architecture (SOA) that provides a scalable, reliable and security-rich information exchange environment. The exchange adheres to interoperability standards such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Health Level 7 (HL7) and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM), making it easy to operate in a heterogeneous environment.

Software components include:

  • Cross-enterprise document sharing (XDS) registry and repository
  • Cross-enterprise user assertion (XUA) provider
  • Audit trail and node authentication (ATNA) audit repository
  • XDS-I imaging document source and consumer
  • Cross community access (XCA) gateway
