As described in IBM's January 9 th , February 6 th , and June 5 th 2007 announcement letters, z/OS.e V1.8 (5655-G52) is the last release of z/OS.e. Key dates are as follows:

  • March 31, 2007: Withdrawal from service of z/OS.e V1.4 and z/OS.e V1.5
  • September 30, 2007: Withdrawal from service of z/OS.e V1.6
  • September, 2008: withdrawal from service of z/OS.e V1.7
  • September, 2009: planned withdrawal from service of z/OS.e V1.8

IBM provides a new pricing alternative for z/OS, System z New Application License Charges (zNALC) which replaces New Application License Charges (NALC) and z/OS.e, and is intended to be IBM's strategic z/OS offering for new workloads.

z/OS.e Capabilities
z/OS.e is unique for the zSeries 890 (z890), zSeries 800 (z800) and System z9 Business Class (z9 BC) servers providing select functions at an exceptional price. z/OS.e is intended to help customers exploit the fast growing world of on demand business by making the deployment of new application workloads on the z890, z800 and z9 BC attractively priced.

z/OS.e uses the same code base as z/OS with custom parameters and invokes an operating environment designed to be comparable to z/OS in service, management, reporting and reliability. In addition, z/OS.e can invoke System z hardware functionality just as z/OS does. No new z/OS skills and service procedures are required for z/OS.e.

z/OS.e is specifically designed for new workloads such as Java, Enterprise Java, C/C++ and Web-based data transaction processing applications, giving these workloads a price/performance customers expect. System z Application Assist Processor (zAAP) and the System z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) are supported. z/OS.e disables traditional workloads.

z/OS.e together with z890, z800 and z9 BC servers and the eWLC subcapacity software pricing methodology may also give you the software and hardware TCO flexibility you've been looking for your Web-based application and ERP database serving needs. See the Specifications tab for more information on z/OS.e.
