March 2005 IBM has announced that the Renault Formula 1 engine and chassis design team has deployed IBM eServer and storage technology running on Linux, achieving a 90% reduction in engine and chassis computational analysis time. The solution, an IBM e1350 cluster running Linux, is based on IBM eServer e325 and e326 servers with AMD Opteron processors. These are optimised for mainstream business applications, enabling Renault Formula 1 to dramatically decrease engine and chassis computational analysis time, and ultimately reduce development costs. In addition, Renault Formula 1 has deployed two IBM eServer pSeries 630 running AIX and one TotalStorage DS 4300 storage server, to capture and store the compute data generated by the e1350 cluster. IBM collaborated with business partner ServiWare to deliver the solution.
"The IBM cluster quickly proved itself to be the essential analysis and simulation tool in engine and chassis development for Renault Formula 1. With xSeries and Linux we have a high-performance, low-cost cluster that will help us to run ever more accurate simulations. With 12 IBM e325 servers working in parallel, a simulation operation which can take three weeks is now completed in 18 hours," says Christophe Verdier, Renault F1 Team IT director. "The performance of this system has enabled Renault F1 to fully optimise its V10 engine capability. This has given the Renault F1 team a considerable advantage, since a race is as much won in the factory as it is on the track."

After two races in this year's world championship, Renault driver Fernando Alonso leads the title race with 16 points ahead of his Renault team-mate Italian Giancarlo Fisichella on 10, while Renault leads the F1 constructors' championship.
