RFID to track bottled gas in India

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), a Fortune 500 company that refines and markets petroleum products in India, will use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to track liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from plant to consumer. The $2.2 million project with IBM will center on HPCL's plant in Nashik.

Implementing RFID will streamline the process of identifying LPG cylinders during bottling, distribution and supply chain and is expected to cover 500,000 cylinders in the initial phase.

"This RFID-based cylinder tracking project is the first of its kind in India. Considering the magnitude of our operations, which continues to grow significantly, it has become imperative for us to bring greater efficiencies in our supply chain. We aim to achieve this with our new RFID-based tracking solution," said G A Shirwaikar, Executive Director-LPG, HPCL. "We also expect to roll out this solution to other plants in India besides extending it to dealers for an integrated supply chain."
