Australian electric company powers up Intelligent Network

Country Energy, manager of Australia’s largest power network, and IBM will work together to develop an intelligent utility network in Australia.

An Intelligent Utility Network is a network of sensors, metering, communications, computer processors, and analytics that connects an entire utility company -- from power plant to plug. Based on open standards, this digital system provides near real-time data and information that a utility can use to manage its grid, minimize outages, improve customer service, and source and deliver power more efficiently. It also allows customers to exert greater control over their power use.

"Climate change and cost of living fears have made families and businesses keener than ever to control their energy and water use," said Craig Murray, Country Energy's managing director. "At the same time, Australia's power grids are beginning to show their age – we need a blueprint to renew those grids as more efficient and responsive Intelligent Networks. We need to put the digital age to work for our network customers – by 2020, Intelligent Networks need to do for essential services what the Internet has done for information."

IBM and Country Energy are focusing on developing solutions that specifically address Australian conditions and electricity networks, and that will enable small renewable generators to interact with the network.

Country Energy is the first utility outside the United States to join the Intelligent Utility Network Coalition, a global group of companies working with IBM to accelerate the adoption of 'smart grid' technologies and business solutions.
