Singapore Urban Transport Solution Launched!

Partnership will Elevate Land Transport Research to Greater Heights

1. Land transport research received a boost today when the Land Transport Authority (LTA) signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) with six key partners to foster technology collaboration in support of the Singapore Urban Transport Solution initiative.

2. The initiative aims to promote Singapore as a centre for research for world class urban transport solution, promote collaboration with leading research and industry partners and build Singapore’s capabilities in the area of urban transport solutions (please refer to Annex A for fact sheet on Singapore Urban Transport Solution).

3. The key partners under the MOC include two statutory boards - Economic Development Board (EDB), Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), and four industry partners – Cisco, IBM Singapore Pte Ltd (IBM), Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) and 3M Technologies (S) Pte Ltd (3M) (please refer to Annex B for fact sheets on the MOC partners).

4. The partnership seeks to integrate existing land transport systems with new initiatives as well as explore new technologies. LTA’s Chief Executive, Mr Yam Ah Mee, who represented LTA at the signing ceremony said, “The Land Transport Masterplan launched in March 2008 presented many new, exciting opportunities for technology collaboration. Under this partnership, research and development will be undertaken to further optimise current technology and explore future ones that will help in realising our vision of a people-centred land transport system. On a broader scale, this partnership plays a critical role in building Singapore’s research capability in land transport as these applications can provide global solutions for many city authorities around the world.”

5. Amongst others, LTA will be the driver, evaluator and potential adopter for new urban transport solution. It will also share its know-how of urban transport solutions and systems with its partners.

6. In line with EDB and IDA mission/vision, they will both play their respective roles that contribute towards the Singapore Urban Transport Solution. EDB will facilitate interactions between the consortium with industry partners from across the world. IDA will ensure the availability of a robust national infocomm infrastructure, as well as bring together different players in the infocomm industry with a view to foster the conceptualisation and development of innovative urban transport services.

7. In this consortium, each industry partner brings different strengths and expertise to the partnership. Cisco brings innovative networking technologies and its experience in working with other municipal governments on similar city-wide projects. Combining expertise in developing world-class transportation systems and innovations from IBM Research Laboratories around the globe, IBM will provide advisory in advance analytics and optimization of transport data as well as information management and integration.

8. ST Electronics will collaborate with LTA in the area of Interactive Road Transportation Infrastructure. This will involve research and development of road user applications and robust ad-hoc wireless mesh communications technologies to introduce a more interactive and inclusive road transport user experience that caters to different needs. 3M will bring in their expertise in noise control, light management and display materials.

9. The MOC signing took place today at LTA’s auditorium at Hampshire Road. The signatories include Mr Tan Choon Shian, Assistant Managing Director, EDB; RADM(NS) Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer, IDA; Mr Dominic Scott, Director for Public Sector, Asia, Cisco; Ms Teresa Lim, Managing Director, IBM Singapore; Mr Lau Thiam Beng, President, ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) and Mr Donald Chang, Managing Director, 3M Singapore.
