Motorists in Brisbane and some other parts of Australia’s state of Queensland will soon have a choice in how they pay their tolls. Queensland Motorways and IBM are working together to bring automated free-flow billing across southeast Queensland's toll roads.
Using the latest traffic management and business intelligence technology, the “smart” system will to provide a variety of cashless billing via transponder, license plate recognition or post-toll payments. The change is expected to expedite auto travel, reduce green house gas emissions and decrease traffic congestion.
"Queensland's motorists will gain substantial benefits in time savings, reliability and improved safety with the planned technological improvements to our toll road network," said Phil Mumford, Chief Executive Officer, Queensland Motorways Limited.
Queensland Motorways owns and operates the Gateway Bridge, the Logan Motorway, the Gateway Extension and the Port of Brisbane Motorway.
Design and development will begin early next year. The entire project will take about 18 months to complete. IBM is already working on traffic management and congestion challenges with a number of cities including London, Stockholm and Singapore.
