Supercomputer boosts Olympic weather forecasts

Chinese weatherman will use an IBM supercomputer to make their predictions for the Olympic Games. The system will also help the Beijing Meteorological Bureau forecast air quality.

Capable of sweeping an area up to 44,000 square kilometres (about 17,000 square miles), the computer can provide hourly numerical weather forecasts for each square kilometre.

"The IBM supercomputer will allow for much more fine numerical weather forecasting for the Beijing area during the Olympics and afterwards," said Liu Xulin, director of the Beijing Meteorological Information centre. "IBM brings many resources to help us improve forecasting, especially their world-class scientists and researchers, who combine meteorology with computer science."
