IBM Expands Product Portfolio to Provide Smaller Businesses with a Corporate Security Blanket

IBM Internet Security Systems unveils major initiative to reduce the complexity and cost of security

Atlanta, GA – September 24, 2008: IBM (NYSE:IBM) today introduced new products that expand its initiative for small to mid-sized businesses to implement the same highly sophisticated and intricate security networks deployed by major corporations.

The new products and services will be offered by IBM’s renowned Internet Security Systems unit, and are designed to meet a pressing need. Research from IBM’s X-Force security team indicates acceleration in security threats on the Web, at the same time that information technology (IT) departments are stretched thin trying to keep pace with security issues and compliance requirements. IBM’s approach streamlines security management, delivering “ahead of the threat” protection against attacks, simplifying security infrastructure through consolidation, and reducing the labor and costs associated with compliance.

Today’s announcement includes:

  • The newest release of IBM’s Proventia Network Multi-Function Security, a Unified Threat Management (UTM) solution geared to help small and medium sized businesses by providing complete security at a lower overall cost. It provides six security modules, and now includes a Secure Sockets Layer Virtual Private Network (SSL VPN) to provide remote users with easy remote access and tighter security controls. IBM offers the only UTM in the industry that is certified to help clients meet PCI compliance by independent testing from NSS Labs.

This release also makes it easier for IT departments to manage with c several firewall enhancements and many usability upgrades. Complete with firewall, intrusion protection, anti-virus, anti-spam, URL filtering, IPSec VPN, and now an SSL VPN, this UTM is a one-stop product that eliminates the need to manage multiple vendors and products.

The new features and enhancements are also found in IBM’s Express Advantage offerings specifically tailored to meet the needs of small businesses: Express Multi-Function Security Bundle and Express Managed Multi-Function Security Bundle. This service joins recently announced security services from IBM ISS and now clients can choose to have a system that is completely monitored and managed 24/7 by IBM, or have IBM monitor the system only on nights and weekends.

“IBM Internet Security Systems continues to break new ground in security. We pioneered the field of vulnerability-based network protection, and today we are solving the next big problem – reducing the cost and complexity of security,” said Val Rahmani, general manager of IBM’s Internet Security Systems. “These new enhancements solidify the IBM ISS platform as the industry’s most comprehensive, extensible and effective line of solutions for enterprises of all sizes.”

IBM Internet Security Systems Advances Its Product Portfolio
New Tools slash security cost and complexity for business sustainability

Atlanta, GA – September 24, 2008: IBM (NYSE:IBM) today introduced new functionality across its security product portfolio to help clients simplify their security infrastructure and slash security costs. These new features are designed to help organizations reap more benefits from their security investments, which is increasingly vital for IT organizations to meet new demands.

Information Technology (IT) organizations have neither the time nor money to manage multitudes of disparate security point solutions, each intended to protect against a specific threat. This problem is compounded as organizations transition from physical to virtual IT environments, which introduces a multitude of new security and compliance risks. IBM Internet Security Systems radically reduces the cost and complexity of security and compliance by delivering products that are inherently designed to work together as an extensible platform, all managed through a single heterogeneous management console. The new product enhancements from IBM ISS are designed to continue this strategy of “strategic security simplification.” Highlights of these major upgrades include:

  • IBM Proventia Network Virtual Intrusion Prevention System (VIPS) Appliance – a first-of-a-kind virtual appliance, the VIPS enables clients to maximize their existing hardware investments by deploying virtual appliances on underutilized hardware resources. This product marks the first product roll-out from PHANTOM, a breakthrough research initiative from IBM X-Force and IBM Research, to offer businesses a holistic approach to secure virtualized server environments. The Phantom initiative also includes virtual appliances for Proventia Enterprise Scanner and Proventia Multi-Function Security in addition to our virtual Proventia Server solution with true defense in-depth introspection security protection. The software based VIPS appliance runs under VMWare, which allows flexible deployments and on-demand security services at the click of a button. It also allows customers to accelerate their adoption of virtual data centers by addressing securing and compliance requirements. Finally, Proventia Network Virtual IPS provides a total-cost-of-ownership savings over time, because clients do not need to buy new hardware when they want to upgrade or expand their intrusion-prevention capabilities.
  • IBM Proventia Network Security Controller (NSC) – a security management appliance that enables protection for high speed networks and helps clients preserve their investment in the Proventia product family portfolio as they upgrade their network fabric from 1 gigabit per second to 10 gigabits per second. The NSC allows clients with existing Proventia appliances to connect those appliances to 10G networks and “team” appliances together to fully inspect traffic at line speed. The NSC also includes full active bypass functionality to eliminate the need for a dedicated bypass on the network and another device on the network that must be managed.
  • IBM Proventia Network Enterprise Scanner – Enterprise Scanner safeguards enterprises from malicious attacks by identifying and prioritizing risks associated with network vulnerabilities while enabling protection activities and comprehensive reporting Enterprise Scanner now supports multiple ports, enabling it to scale without the need for additional appliances. This feature drives efficiencies and helps reduce costs because clients can scan multiple networks from a single appliance. Also, because the appliance now can scan an organization’s IT infrastructure faster, clients can begin remediation tasks immediately further mitigating risk by leveraging advanced ticketing and profile functionality. This helps drive efficiencies and helps reduce costs because clients can scan multiple networks from a single appliance. New features also include Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS)-based rating, which allows users to prioritize discovered vulnerabilities based on an industry-standard rating system. Users can continually assess the status of their network by using this benchmark and leveraging the continuous scanning window feature.
  • IBM Proventia SiteProtector 7.0 – The newest version of IBM Proventia SiteProtector enables clients to easily manage and measure their enterprise security infrastructure through an easy-to-use, centralized console. Information technology staff can identify risks and manage products through a single console, while also running compliance reports with the solution’s new policy management tool. With updated policy management features, IBM helps reduce security management time and costs, streamline compliance reporting and reduce risk. This product is also offered as a managed security service in which IBM monitors and manages the SiteProtector tool 24x7 or just on nights and weekends when an organization’s staff is not at work. As a managed service, clients benefit from knowing IBM is carefully monitoring their IT infrastructure so that the business can focus on its core function and focus on serving its customers rather than maintaining its IT operations.
  • Client Security Readiness Tool IBM ISS is launching its first Client Security Readiness Tool, a free professional services workshop which identifies and measures a client’s security posture. Through this standardized, repeatable tool, security experts can assess a client’s security and attribute a baseline security posture number. This measurement tool allows clients to benchmark how their security increases and helps them realize where they spend their IT security dollars, areas of potential risk, and then determine which security solutions can be implemented. Currently, the tool incorporates IBM’s entire services portfolio of offerings and will include software and systems solutions in the near future.

“We are eager to get our hands on the Proventia Network Virtual Intrusion Prevention System (VIPS) Appliance from IBM Internet Security Systems,” said Pat O'Day, Chief Technology Officer at BlueLock, LLC, a managed technology services provider that delivers infrastructure-as-a-service to global corporations. “The VIPS fits right into our virtual cloud computing strategy and will be a great opportunity for our clients that wish to significantly improve the security their environments.”
