Continued support for research partnerships are essential.

Emmet Ryan writes: If Ireland's knowledge economy is to succeed, it will need to build on the achievements of existing collaborations. Recent years have seen industry and academia come together to achieve mutual benefits. Across the island, organisations on both sides are recognising the opportunities available. There are more then simple economic benefits to these kinds of collaboration. The success of one project can have a wide impact on other aspects of university or firm. There's substantial cultural benefit to be gained from some of these collaborations. The 1641 deposition project, which IBM is working on with Trinity College Dublin, is helping to find a better way to store historically significant information.

"They (Trinity) are analysing transcripts from 1641,at the time of the uprising, and they are basically converting those paper records into digital form", says Marie Wallace, senior software development manager at the IBM Dubln Software Lab. We're working with Trinity to create a digital humanities knowledge infrastrucutre." she says. "We are looking to see how we can create this knowledge infrastructure to allow researchers to collaborate".
