HONG KONG, 5 February 2009 -- IBM China/Hong Kong Limited (NYSE:IBM) yesterday unveiled its 2009 strategy focused on building a Smarter Hong Kong by helping businesses, government and people to work smarter, more efficiently and productively, and transform themselves to emerge as leaders from the global economic crisis. Part of IBM’s global vision for a Smarter Planet, the strategy will also support clients in capturing opportunities from the economic integration of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region.
IBM also provided highlights from 2008, during which IBM stepped up its transformation into a high-value innovation partner for enterprises, and maintained its market share leadership in all segments of Hong Kong’s IT market, including server, storage, services, and application development and deployment software*. IBM also made significant inroads in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) market by strengthening its partnership with ISVs.
For 2009, Dominic Tong, General Manage, IBM China/Hong Kong Limited said that the challenging business environment would also present a time of opportunity for Hong Kong enterprises and SMEs.
“The global economic crisis and the expanding economic integration between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region make it urgent for Hong Kong organizations to change. We increasingly have to compete on the basis of being smarter in the way we do business and in managing our physical and social infrastructure,” he said.
“Fortunately, new capabilities are at hand. The planet is becoming not just smaller and flatter, but also smarter as physical and digital infrastructures are converging into systems that are interconnected, instrumented and intelligent.
“In 2009, IBM’s focus will be on building a Smarter Hong Kong, using deep customer insight, advanced technology and new business models to help our clients to work smarter and emerge as leaders from the economic crisis,” said Mr. Tong.
According to Mr. Tong, IBM will be providing high-value, innovative and integrated solutions to enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong enterprises. This includes solutions that allow clients to make intelligent decisions and drive growth using information available in real time from a multitude of sources; dynamic infrastructure that drives down costs and is intelligent and secure; dynamic processes and tools that help enterprises work smarter and let people collaborate seamlessly across geographies and time zones; and green solutions that drive greater efficiencies while addressing environmental and sustainability concerns.
“In support of the increasing opportunities from the Hong Kong-PRD economic integration, we will also be providing services and solutions for government initiatives and to SMEs to assist them in moving up the value chain,” he said.
“Already, in the last three months we have seen stronger demand from clients for solutions that optimize efficiency and effectiveness while minimizing cost, and allow enterprises to unlock value from existing data and information to drive business growth.
“Over the last decade and a half, IBM has successfully transformed its business, leading to record global revenue and earnings in 2008. In Hong Kong, we’ve helped clients succeed in tough times as well as good times,” said Mr. Tong. “Taking this knowledge, we will collaborate with our clients to convert challenges into opportunities, and to build a Smarter Hong Kong.”
