IBM Increases Hiring Plans

Today in published reports, IBM disclosed that it now expects worldwide hiring of an estimated 18,800 new employees in 2004. This represents an increase of 88% from the worldwide hiring forecast of 10,000 released at the outset of the year.
IBM is focusing its hiring on growth areas and high-potential businesses and markets. About two-thirds of all of the hiring would be in emerging growth opportunities such as Linux and open standards, grid computing, as well as Business Process Transformation Services. BPTS represented $1.4 billion of revenue in the first half of 2004 and grew roughly 40 percent year-to-year.
This hiring excludes workers who join IBM via acquisition or from strategic outsourcing contracts. IBM now expects to end the year with more than 330,000 employees, which would be the largest number in 13 years. In 1991, IBM ended the year with more than 344,300 employees. |
