The implementation
A proven, low-risk solution
Several customers, like Pep Boys or Scheels All Sports, have implemented Open POS Solutions over the last several years in their stores. Implementation partners of choice have been ISV companies like Oracle Retail, PCMS and SAP Triversity.

Pep Boys, for example, started its IT transformation by replacing its outdated POS environment with an IBM Open POS Solution—a next-generation POS configuration built on Java technology-based Oracle Retail Point-of-Service software running on IBM Store Integration Framework and comprising hardware, an operating system and services from IBM.

The solution is based on IBM Store Integration Framework, an open-standards, Web-based platform that connects Pep Boys’ POS system and Oracle Retail applications. “Store Integration Framework enables the integration of people, processes and data throughout the store and at various customer touch points,” says Jan Jackman, general manager, Retail on Demand. “It is a service-oriented architecture that leverages open and industry standards to allow Pep Boys to reuse components and applications, helping to reduce the time it takes to deploy new service touch points as well as reduce total cost of ownership.”

The cost of ownership
Long-term investment protection
Open POS Solutions from IBM provide an open and flexible infrastructure with a low total cost of ownership. Our solutions are designed to help you:
  • Reuse existing business components to reduce your IT maintenance and installation costs.
  • Leverage open standards like J2EE, XML and ARTS—middleware and applications can run on virtually any hardware and operating system.
  • Enjoy reduced integration costs and a speedy integration process.
  • Increase efficiency of systems management and administration.
  • Make enhancements and changes without disrupting systems.
  • Take advantage of flexible configurations for compatibility with future application investments.
