In 1995, IBM awarded the Vermont Department of Education, a recognized leader in the use of authentic assessment, a Reinventing Education grant to strengthen the links between assessment and standards-based instruction. The partnership developed and implemented Riverdeep Learning Village to increase teacher's consistency in scoring student work. Teachers across the state now have a common understanding of the quality of student work needed to reach or exceed academic standards -- information that they also communicate to students and parents. The project also incorporated an assessment planning guide into the curriculum, enabling educators to ensure that necessary skills are being taught and assessed appropriately.
In 2002, IBM awarded the Vermont Collaboration a Reinventing Education grant to help improve instruction along a four-phase continuum of a teacher's professional life: preparation, induction, professional and leader. The Vermont Collaboration is made up of the Vermont Department of Education, the University of Vermont, Vermont State Colleges, and the Vermont Mathematics Partnership.
Innovative applications of Riverdeep Learning Village are serving as the primary vehicle for reform. The common element that will support each teacher phase is a collaborative community that shares effective instructional practices. The initiative also will support improved collaboration within the Vermont Mathematics Partnership and state licensure and re-licensure programs.
