IBM and the Texas Education Agency worked together through Reinventing Education to improve statewide accountability -- a critical component of higher student achievement. Beginning in 1998, the partnership developed a statewide data warehouse that makes student information available to every Texas school district for analysis and accountability.
An especially powerful use of this information is through Just for the Kids, a statewide nonprofit organization, and its national affiliate, the National Center for Education Accountability. Just for the Kids developed a web-based application that allows parents, school administrators and community members throughout the state to conduct a variety of education analyses, including longitudinal data on individual school performance, disaggregated by subject and grade and compared with the performances of schools with similar demographics. The Web site also provides information that is critical for implementation of the federal No Child Left Behind law.
Just for the Kids trains educators and community leaders to utilize the data and advocates for school improvement strategies based on promising practices gleaned from studying high-performing schools. The National Center for Education Accountability is working with the U.S. Department of Education and statewide education coalitions to spread their school reports and best practices framework in other states.
