In January 2001, IBM Mexico in an early collaboration with the Tech Institute of Studies of Monterrey (ITESM) developed a Spanish version of Riverdeep Learning Village and created an online course designed to train teachers to use this instructional tool.
Building on this work, in June 2003, IBM Mexico and the State of Hidalgo in Mexico launched a Reinventing Education partnership designed to improve teacher professional development and instruction. The initial phase of the project is focusing on improving standards-based instruction of primary and secondary school teachers of Spanish, biology, history, science and mathematics. Riverdeep Learning Village is enhancing communication and collaboration among these teachers and enabling the dissemination of effective practices.
The partnership is using an open standard technological solution, including a server and applications over Linux. By connecting with several IBM Mexico initiatives, including the e-Mexico project, which provides for community digital centers throughout the country, the partnership is helping promote the adoption of open standards in Mexico's education system.
