Through Reinventing Education, IBM and the Memphis City Schools are working together on multiple aspects of standards-based reform. Through a grant made in 1998, the district is implementing Riverdeep Learning Village in elementary, middle, and high schools to enable teachers to assess student work in a consistent manner that informs and strengthens their instruction, as well as to strengthen the district's professional development training in assessment for teachers and principals. The district also is using the technology to enable teachers to develop standards-based lesson plans.
In 2002, IBM awarded the Memphis Collaboration, consisting of eight institutions of higher learning, with a Reinventing Education grant to build on the district's efforts by transforming the training of pre-service and in-service teachers. Innovative applications of Riverdeep Learning Village are serving as the primary vehicle for these changes. Pre-service teachers in colleges of education and in alternative licensure classes -- a major program in Memphis -- are using the technology to refine their standards-based instructional skills and develop lesson plans. All newly-hired teachers are using the technology for these purposes during orientation and through follow-up sessions offered at the Teaching & Learning Academy; they also receive online mentoring from "master" teachers experienced in using the tools. Current teachers are using the technology to access a comprehensive archive of effective lesson plans.
