Reinventing Education

Italy

Through Reinventing Education, the IBM Italy Foundation worked in cooperation with the Ministry of Education to improve teacher professional development and to connect schools with home and community.

Since the program's launch, a translated and customized version of Riverdeep Learning Village had been developed and implemented to reach these goals in three cities: Benevento in Southern Italy, Crema in Northern Italy, and Pontedera in Central Italy. Using Riverdeep Learning Village, parents and teachers have been communicating together online with a focus on student work and learning. Because communication is asynchronous, parents can ask teachers questions about their children's progress at any time and from anywhere, and teachers can respond back when convenient for them. Teachers also are using the technology to collaborate online, sharing effective practices to improve their instruction.

As an expansion of the Reinventing Education project, the Leadership Educativa in cooperation with the Ufficio Scolastico Regionale per la Lombardia used Riverdeep Learning Village for the professional development of principals in the Lombardia region. The project focused on online courses designed to build the leadership and change management skills of principals. Principals also were able to collaborate online, sharing challenges and strategies.
