Reinventing Education

Houston, Texas

Through Reinventing Education, IBM has worked with the Houston Independent School District, the nation's seventh largest, to improve student literacy. The partnership has developed and implemented Watch-me!-Read, software that uses interactive speech-recognition technology, in the first-grade classrooms of every elementary school in the district. Teachers have been using the software effectively with emerging readers, English language learners, and "gifted and talented" students.

An independent evaluation by researchers from Vanderbilt University found that, as a result of the grant project, first-graders tested significantly higher in reading on both word recognition and comprehension tasks.
