Through a Reinventing Education grant awarded in 2002, IBM is working with the Clark County Collaboration to improve the quality of teacher professional development at the pre-service and in-service levels. Innovative applications of Riverdeep Learning Village technology, as well as new technology developments, are serving as the primary vehicle for reform.
For pre-service teachers, the technology will be integrated into BLOCK, a newly initiated field-based program at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Using the technology, teacher-education students will be required to create electronic portfolios that incorporate video and other materials to demonstrate their progress towards developing instructional skills. Learning teams made up of university faculty, teacher education candidates, experienced teachers, and principals also will use Riverdeep Learning Village for lesson planning, sharing effective practices and online mentoring. As new teachers enter the classroom, they will continue to have access to and use the technology as part of their ongoing development.
The Clark County Collaboration is made up of the Clark County School District, the Nevada Department of Education, and the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada, on behalf of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
