Reinventing Education

Charlotte, North Carolina

Through Reinventing Education, IBM and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools focused on increasing parent and community participation in the district's schools. Using Riverdeep Learning Village, parents are communicating with their children's teachers online, asking questions and providing information regardless of time and place, which teachers can respond to thoughtfully at a time convenient for them. Community members also are using the technology to serve as classroom resources and mentors.

The initial focus of the project has expanded considerably since the original grant was awarded in 1994. Teachers also are now using the technology to raise the quality of their instruction by developing standards-based lesson plans using resources from the Internet. Effective plans have been posted to an online library that is accessible by all the district's teachers.
