IBM awarded the Carolinas Collaboration a Reinventing Education grant in 2002 to improve student achievement through better trained and more effective classroom teachers. Innovative applications of Riverdeep Learning Village, as well as new technology developments, are serving as the primary vehicles for reform.
The Carolinas Collaboration, made up of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools, four universities in North Carolina and one university and six school districts in South Carolina, is developing model professional development classrooms where teachers can learn to apply instructional technology and best practices. In these classrooms, experienced teachers will serve as mentors to new teachers, providing guidance on instructional planning and strategies, and thereby helping improve both early effectiveness and long-term retention. The goal is to develop a comprehensive teacher preparation model that can be replicated in other institutions and districts throughout the two states. |
