2009 Awards
  • Corporate Citizenship
    IBM was ranked the #1 ethical corporation by Covalence, the Swiss ethical ranking agency, above 581 businesses across 18 sectors, The rating is based on capture of information from media and the internet, matching corporate offerings to specific societal expectations.
  • Corporarate Citizenship
    IBM Singapore won seven awards at the Singapore HR Awards 2009 including the category of Corporate Social Responsibility. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports presented the award at a ceremony attended by CEOs and HR leaders.

    IBM was named one of the "50 Most Socially Responsible Corporations" by MacLean's, a Canadian weekly magazine.
  • Environment
    IBM Canada Ltd. has been selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers. This special designation recognizes the employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture. Winners of this competition have developed exception earth-friendly initiatives and are attracting employees and customers because of their environmental leadership.

    IBM Spain was recognized by the Randstad Foundation as the best company for social action in 2008. CGM Juan Antoni Zufiria accepted the award, which recognized IBM's inclusion of people with disabilities.
  • Corporate Citizenship
    Stan Litow, Vice President, IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs, was chosen to ring the opening bell at the NY Stock Exchange on February 23, International Corporate Philanthropy Day. He accepted the National Philanthropy Award from the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, which recognized IBM's On Demand Community.

    In Taiwan, IBM was ranked No. 2 in the foreign company group of CommonWealth Magazine's 2009 Corporate Citizen Survey, surpassing HP and DuPont. The award was presented by President Ma Ying-Jeou at a ceremony in March. For the last three consecutive years, IBM has been selected as one of the top 10 corporate socially responsible companies.

    IBM Poland has been awarded the status of 'Best Practice for Business and Society' by the Responsible Business Forum, the country's largest corporate organization focused on corporate social responsibility.

    IBM Romania has been recognized with a 'diploma' award from the Romanian Donors Forum and the Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe for being one of the top corporate socially responsible companies. The recognition cited KidSmart, as well as other grants made by IBM.
  • Accessibility
    IBM Spain and Asociación Semilla's joint SocialGNU project has won the title of best 'Best IT Project' at an awards ceremony hosted at the Ministry of Industry by the Bip Bip Foundation, which is dedicated to helping the disadvantaged. The project promotes Open Source and Open Software amongst nonprofits working with socially disadvantaged people.

    IBM China was awarded a certificate of appreciation for their outstanding contribution to education by the China Ministry of Education (MoE) at the Spring Festival Reception for more than 30 multinational companies.
  • Corporate Citizenship
    For the seventh consecutive year, IBM Hong Kong has been awarded with "The Caring Company Award" by the Hong Kong Council of Social Services. The award ceremony was held in February in front of an audience of 2,000 people.

2008 Awards
  • Disaster Relief
    The President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has recognized IBM for its continued commitment to aid the people of Aceh and Nias, still suffering from the aftermath of the tsunami that hit the region in 2004. IBM has provided relief assistance through the SIMBA system (Sistem Informasi Manajemen Bencana Aceh), or Aceh Disaster Management System. It has been designated by the government of Indonesia as the approved system for Internal Displaced Person (IDP) registration, as well as data consolidation and logistics reporting. The award recognition is made to organizations demonstrating exemplary social responsibility efforts for tsunami relief.

    IBM was recognized by China's Ministry of Education (MoE) at the annual Spring Festival Reception for its outstanding contributions in education. IBM was recognized as the top company to influence China's education system and was awarded a "Certificate of Honour" for this achievement. The event was hosted by premier Chinese government and education leaders and was attended by executives from the country's top 30 multinational companies.

    IBM Greater China Group received the Best Public Image award in recognition of outstanding corporate social responsibility. It is the most reputable award from community groups for leadership in corporate social responsibility in China, and is initiated by the Development Research Center of the State Council and Guang Hua Media.

    The Points of Light Foundation presented Sam Palmisano with its highest community service honor — the George Bush Corporate Leadership Award.

    IBM received the Partner in Progress Award from the United Way of America.

    IBM Chairman of the Greater China Group, Henry Chow, received the "2007 Most Socially Responsible Entrepreneur in China" award from the China Committee of Corporate Citizenship under the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

    IBM Taiwan received the Corporate Social Responsibility Award from Global View Magazine.

    IBM Spain was ranked #1 for the third consecutive year in the MERCO (Spanish Monitor of Corporate Reputation) Survey for the IT company with the best corporate reputation in Spain.

    IBM Mexico was awarded with the "Ethics and Values in the Industry" recognition by the National Confederation of Industry Chambers of the Mexican United States.

    IBM received the Disability Rights Advocates' inaugural Eagle Award for decades of accessible products and technology, and overall leadership in the development of technology access policies.

    IBM New Zealand was awarded the inaugural Robin Hood Foundation Social Hero Award for Education Partnership.

    IBM Australia received a "Gold" rating, the highest possible, in the Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI), an independent survey of Australia's top companies run by the St James Ethics centre, an independent, not-for-profit that provides a nonjudgmental forum for the promotion and exploration of ethics. The CRI covers four key areas of corporate performance: community, environment, marketplace, and workplace.
  • World Community Grid
    On June 13, World Community Grid (link resides outside of ibm.com) and its FightAIDS@Home project were recognized by the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis (GBC) at the Sixth Annual Awards for Business Excellence Gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Founded in 2001, the GBC is dedicated to combating the AIDS epidemic through the business sector's unique skills and expertise.

2006 Awards
  • Social Responsibility
    For the second year in a row, IBM China has been named Best Corporate Citizen by the China Corporate Citizenship Committee. Approximately 30 companies receive this award annually from a field of more than 300 entries. The awards are made based on the company's performance in key areas, including the environment and community.
  • Web Adaptation Technology
    IBM has received Goodwill Industries International's 2006 “21st Century Business Partner Award” (link resides outside of ibm.com) for its Web Adaptation Technology. The award specifically recognizes the innovative partnership between IBM and Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey; currently, more than 1,000 users in the area are now able to access the internet through this software application.

2005 Awards
  • Social Responsibility
    IBM was featured as one of the top 10 improvers and within the top 25 on AccountAbility's (link resides outside of ibm.com) Accountability Rating Report. The report measures the extent to which companies put responsible practices at the heart of their businesses. AccountAbility is an international membership organization committed to enhancing the performance of organizations and to developing the competencies of individuals in social and ethical accountability and sustainable development.

    IBM Australia has again maintained an overall rating of a "high" AA in the RepuTex (link resides outside of ibm.com) 2005 Social Responsibility Ratings. This places IBM in the top 10 socially responsible organizations in Australia. The overall rating was determined primarily by looking at four key categories, including social impact, workplace practices, corporate governance, and environment.

    IBM Brazil was recognized by the Balanço Social das Telecomunicações (Telecommunications Social Report), which publicizes the greatest social actions from the Telecommunications area in the country. IBM was recognized for the second year for its work on various programs, including KidSmart, Web Adaptation Technology, Reinventing Education, TryScience, On Demand Community and World Community Grid.

    IBM Mexico was awarded the "Ethics and Values in the Industry" recognition by the Confederation of Industry Chambers of Mexico (CONCAMIN) (link resides outside of ibm.com). This is the third time that IBM Mexico achieved this recognition since it was established in 2002. The recognition acknowledges IBM's ability to innovate and promote a culture of principles and values, using technology as a key element.

  • KidSmart Early Learning Program
    KidSmart was recognized with the 2005 Codie Award for the "Best Distributed Computing Solution." Presented by the Software & Information Industry Association (link resides outside of ibm.com), the Codie Awards celebrate achievement and vision in software, education technology and digital content. For 20 years, the Codie Awards have remained the leading honor for the software and information industry's finest products and services.

    The KidSmart program in South Africa was awarded top place in the African ICT Achiever Awards, Civil Society category. IBM's partner, the Centre for Early Childhood Development, won the award for implementing KidSmart to bridge the digital divide in Africa. The African ICT Achiever Awards, which are known as the Oscars of the IT world, recognize ICT excellence, promote entrepreneurship, stimulate business in ICT services between Africa and the rest of the world, act as a catalyst for the stimulation of leading edge solutions in government departments and recognize individuals responsible for spearheading change.

  • Eternal Egypt recognized
    Eternal Egypt received the UN World Summit Award (link resides outside of ibm.com) on the Information Society in Tunisia. IBM's partner, CultNat, received the award on behalf of the Egyptian government and IBM. Eternal Egypt was selected as a winner in the "best practice" and "e-content" categories out of 750 "products" nominated from 168 countries.

    The web site also won the 2005 Webby Worthy award (link resides outside of ibm.com) from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.

  • Reinventing Education
    IBM Ireland received the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland's (link resides outside of ibm.com) President's Awards 2005 for its Reinventing Education grant project, specifically for "taking a valuable and multi-faceted approach towards the development and education of children in the area of science and technology."
